Project planning
Does your website need a refresh or a rebuild?
Separate visual preferences from structural problems before choosing the project scope.

List what the current website cannot do. Outdated imagery and unclear copy may call for a focused refresh. An unmanageable content system or missing integration may require a more substantial build.
Sort the list into content, presentation and functionality. This makes it easier to discuss dependencies and identify the most useful first change.
Bring the list to the initial conversation along with your current website and any practical timing constraints. The scope should follow the problem, not an assumption that everything needs replacing.
